How to Get Deals at Drug Stores

Video Transcript:

Check Sales Flyers

  • We’ve mainly been talking about buying items at grocery stores and big box stores, but shopping at drug stores works much the same way.
  • You will use the same methods—using the master price list of the items you regularly buy, scan the sales flyers of your local drug stores to see which of your regularly purchased items are on sale.
  • Predictably, the best deals on the majority of the food items you purchase will be at grocery stores, and the best deals on the majority of the non-food items you purchase will be at drug stores. But you can still happen upon a great deal on any item at any type of store.

Check Drug Store Loyalty Programs

  • Not always, but often the greatest savings can be achieved at drug stores and their loyalty programs.
  • What makes drug store deals so powerful is their loyalty programs and the store “money” or credit they give back.
  • When you can find a sale where an item is a great price, and it offers store credit, and you can use a coupon, it is easy to see how 50% (or more) savings can be achieved. Actually, 75% or more is not unheard of in some instances.
  • Sometimes the drug store’s loyalty program offers discounts even on regular priced items.

Use the Same Basic Strategies

  • Write your shopping list according to what is on sale with store money back, especially if you have a coupon.
  • For items you need immediately that are not on sale, find the cheapest regular price and buy a couple to hold you over until the next sale. Ideally, you will come to the place where your shopping list will almost never include these types of items; your shopping will consist almost entirely of getting the deals, not desperately buying your needs at regular price.
  • When you find one of your desired items for little or nothing, this is the time to buy as much of it as you can possibly afford and use before it goes bad. For non-perishables, a year’s worth is not outlandish; if you can buy $6 detergent for $1 or $2, why wouldn’t you buy a years’ worth?

Be Familiar With Drug Store Policies

  • Drug stores offer a unique category of coupons: store non-manufacturer coupons, which they allow you to pair with manufacturer coupons for the same item.
  • Drug stores’ coupon policies tend to be more complicated than grocery store or big box store policies.
  • But because there is more earning potential at the drug stores, learning their policies is more than worth it.
