GRASPED Extreme Couponing Playbook – Module 6

Shopping for Items that Rarely or Never Have Coupons

Video Transcript:

Use Earned Gift Cards or Store “Money”

  • We have discussed how you can take advantage of store loyalty programs that offer you gift cards or store “money” or credit for purchasing items at their store.
  • You can use some of this credit to purchase needed items that rarely go on sale, and/or rarely have coupons (i.e., milk, fresh produce). Of course, double check for the rare sale or coupon before you shop for these items.
  • Even the drug stores sell a few of these types of items. However, note the store’s exclusions on the use of their store credit towards purchasing certain types of items (i.e., milk is sometimes excluded).

Use “Overage”

  • In the rare instance that the value of a coupon exceeds the amount of the item being purchased, it is a situation which couponers have named “overage.” Use the overage amount towards other items in your cart.
  • Note that few stores permit overage, and overage situations are extremely rare.
  • Look for clearance items in the store that are at least half off, and coupons that do not have size restrictions; these tend to provide the best circumstances for giving overage.
  • Drug stores sometimes provide purchased based coupons (i.e., $10 off of $40) where maybe $30 worth of items in the purchase are covered in large part by coupons; the last $10 of the purchase is thus virtually free, especially if it involves a “money” back deal.
